A woman has been sexually assaulted after getting out of a taxi in inner city Sydney.

About midnight today the 34-year-old woman left a hotel at the intersection of George and Argyle streets at The Rocks with a group of friends.

When she got out of a taxi at Murray Street in Pyrmont a short time later, she was dragged into nearby Allen Street and sexually assaulted.

She told police she had noticed a man staring at her throughout the night.

Police would like to speak to another woman, who is believed to have taken a photograph of the man on her mobile phone after noticing his behaviour.

The man is described as being aged about 30, of Mediterranean/Middle Eastern appearance, about 170 centimetres tall with short brown hair. He was wearing a dark grey tracksuit top and jeans.

The victim suffered facial injuries.

She was taken to a nearby hotel where she alerted police.

She was then taken to hospital.

Investigations are continuing.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
